A Song of Ice and Fire: A Reading Order for People Who Watched the Show First

Plenty of people come to George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire after watching Game of Thrones, and that's a perfectly good on-ramp — but the books are a different, richer beast. The reading order is the publication order: A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons.
One wrinkle worth knowing: A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons happen at roughly the same time but follow different characters, because the cast got too big for a single timeline. Read them in published order your first time through. Some readers later try a combined "Feast-Dance" chronological re-read that interleaves the chapters, but that's a victory lap for round two, not the way to meet the story.
If you watched the show, the first three books will feel familiar but deeper — more POV characters, more political texture, and motivations the series had to flatten for time. Books four and five go somewhere the show never adapted faithfully, which is exactly why they're worth reading.
Show-first readers: did the books change how you saw any character? And be honest — did you bounce off A Feast for Crows, or did it grow on you?
