About This Series
Deborah Harkness's All Souls trilogy begins with A Discovery of Witches, a richly atmospheric fantasy that blends history, romance, science, and magic. Diana Bishop, a historian and reluctant witch at Oxford, discovers an enchanted manuscript in the Bodleian Library that draws the attention of vampires, daemons, and other witches — all of whom want it for their own purposes. Her unlikely alliance with the vampire Matthew Clairmont sets off a dangerous journey through time and across continents.
Read the trilogy in order: A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life. Harkness also wrote Time's Convert, a companion novel focusing on Matthew's son Marcus.
Harkness is a professor of history, and her academic expertise infuses every page. The historical settings — Elizabethan London, Revolutionary-era France — feel authentic and lived-in, with real historical figures appearing naturally alongside the fictional characters. The creature mythology is thoughtfully constructed, with biological explanations for vampirism and witchcraft that add a scientific dimension unusual in supernatural fiction. The romance between Diana and Matthew develops slowly and is built on intellectual companionship as much as attraction.
