About This Series
James Patterson's Alex Cross series is one of the longest-running and most popular thriller franchises in the world. Alex Cross is a forensic psychologist and detective based in Washington, D.C., who regularly faces off against some of the most twisted serial killers and criminal masterminds in fiction. Cross is also a devoted father and family man, and the tension between his dangerous career and his desire to protect his loved ones drives the series' emotional core.
Start with Along Came a Spider, the first book, which introduces Cross and his nemesis Gary Soneji. While the books can be read somewhat independently, the character development and family dynamics build over the series, making publication order the most rewarding approach.
Patterson's signature style — short chapters, rapid pacing, and cliffhanger endings — has made his books some of the fastest reads in the thriller genre. The Alex Cross series succeeds because Cross himself is a genuinely compelling character: intelligent, empathetic, and haunted by the violence he confronts professionally. The early books in particular feature memorably terrifying antagonists, and the Washington D.C. setting gives the series a grounded, politically aware backdrop. With over thirty books in the series, new readers have an enormous library to explore.
