The Mistborn Reading Order: Which Era Should You Start With?

by Nelera · June 23, 2026 · Updated October 1, 2026

Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn is one of the best entry points in all of fantasy, but newcomers often hesitate because the series is split across different time periods. Don't overthink it: start with the original trilogy — The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, and The Hero of Ages. These three tell a complete, self-contained story with one of the most satisfying magic systems ever put on a page, and they're the right beginning for everyone.

Centuries later in the same world comes the Wax and Wayne era — sometimes called Era Two — beginning with The Alloy of Law, then Shadows of Self, The Bands of Mourning, and The Lost Metal. The setting jumps forward to a frontier-and-railroads age, so it reads almost like a different genre (a magic-fueled Western), but it's deeply enriched by everything the original trilogy set up. Read Era One first; Era Two is full of payoffs that mean little without it.

A note for the curious: Mistborn is part of Sanderson's larger interconnected Cosmere universe, and eagle-eyed readers will spot crossover threads with his other series. You do not need to read any of that to enjoy Mistborn — it stands completely on its own — but it's a fun rabbit hole once you're hooked.

So which era is your favorite — the epic original trilogy or the cleverer, lighter Wax and Wayne books? And for newcomers reading this: did The Final Empire's ending get you the way it gets everyone? Let's talk below.
