About This Series
Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series is a masterclass in fantasy world-building, centered around one of the most innovative magic systems in the genre. Set on the ash-covered world of Scadrial, the original trilogy follows Vin, a street urchin who discovers she can burn metals to gain supernatural abilities, as she joins a crew of rebels planning to overthrow the immortal Lord Ruler who has dominated the world for a thousand years.
The original Mistborn trilogy (The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension, The Hero of Ages) should be read first and in order. Sanderson later wrote a second era set 300 years later — Mistborn Era 2 (The Alloy of Law, Shadows of Self, The Bands of Mourning, The Lost Metal) — which shifts to a western-industrial setting. Both eras are excellent, but the original trilogy is the essential starting point as Era 2 builds on its events and mythology.
What distinguishes Mistborn from other fantasy series is Sanderson's approach to magic. Allomancy, the metal-burning magic system, has clear rules and limitations, which means the action sequences feel like intricate puzzles rather than arbitrary power escalation. Sanderson is also known for his devastating plot twists and satisfying conclusions — the way the original trilogy's ending recontextualizes everything that came before is genuinely brilliant.
