The Wheel of Time — Reading Order

Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time is one of the longest and most influential epic fantasy series ever written. Spanning fourteen main novels and a prequel, the series follows Rand al'Thor and his companions as they discover that the Dark One — an ancient evil imprisoned since the creation of the world — is breaking free, and one of them may be the prophesied Dragon Reborn destined to face him.

Read the books in publication order, starting with The Eye of the World. Robert Jordan wrote the first eleven books before his passing in 2007. Brandon Sanderson completed the final three volumes using Jordan's extensive notes, delivering a conclusion that fans widely consider faithful to Jordan's vision. The prequel, New Spring, can be read after book five or at any point after — it provides backstory but is not essential for the main narrative.

The Wheel of Time is a commitment — over 4.4 million words — but the payoff is an extraordinarily detailed world with hundreds of named characters, a deep magic system, and cultural richness that few fantasy series can match. Jordan excels at building tension across multiple books, and the final volumes deliver spectacular convergences of plotlines that were seeded thousands of pages earlier. The series does have a famously slower middle stretch (books 7-10), but many readers find these more rewarding on rereads.
