About This Series

Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen is the most ambitious and challenging epic fantasy series ever published. Spanning ten massive volumes, the series encompasses hundreds of named characters, multiple continents, and a timeline stretching back hundreds of thousands of years. There is no single protagonist — the story follows soldiers, gods, ascendants, undead armies, and ordinary people caught in conflicts that span the globe.

Read the ten books in order: Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates, Memories of Ice, House of Chains, Midnight Tides, The Bonehunters, Reaper's Gale, Toll the Hounds, Dust of Dreams, and The Crippled God. Ian Cameron Esslemont has also written companion novels set in the same world. Gardens of the Moon is notoriously difficult — Erikson drops readers into the deep end with no exposition — but the series rewards perseverance enormously.

Malazan is not for everyone, and it does not try to be. Erikson, a trained anthropologist and archaeologist, treats his world with academic rigor, exploring how cultures form, clash, and remember their pasts. The series is deeply philosophical, grappling with compassion, the nature of civilization, and what it means to be a soldier. When the emotional moments land — and they do, repeatedly, across all ten books — they hit harder than almost anything else in fantasy. Deadhouse Gates' Chain of Dogs sequence and The Bonehunters' siege are legendary set pieces.
