About This Series
Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber is a seminal work of fantasy that introduced concepts and structures that have influenced the genre ever since. The series follows the royal family of Amber — the one true world, of which all other worlds (including Earth) are mere Shadows. Prince Corwin, an amnesiac on Earth who gradually recovers his memories of Amber, must navigate sibling rivalries, betrayals, and interdimensional warfare to claim the throne.
The series is divided into the Corwin Cycle (five books, starting with Nine Princes in Amber) and the Merlin Cycle (five books, starting with Trumps of Doom). The Corwin Cycle is the essential reading; the Merlin Cycle continues the saga with Corwin's son.
Zelazny's prose is muscular, poetic, and remarkably efficient — each Amber book is short by modern fantasy standards, yet accomplishes more in 200 pages than many novels do in 800. The concept of Shadow-walking — moving between infinite parallel worlds by altering reality step by step — is one of fantasy's most creative ideas. The royal family dynamics are Machiavellian and genuinely unpredictable, with every alliance subject to betrayal.
