About This Series

Jim Butcher's Dresden Files is the series that defined modern urban fantasy. Set in contemporary Chicago, it follows Harry Dresden, the only wizard listed in the phone book, as he works as a private investigator solving supernatural cases. The series blends hardboiled detective fiction with fantasy, humor, and an ever-expanding mythology involving vampires, faeries, fallen angels, and cosmic-level threats.

The reading order is publication order, starting with Storm Front. The first two books are widely considered the weakest — Butcher was still finding his voice. Most fans recommend pushing through to book three (Grave Peril) or four (Summer Knight), where the series hits its stride and never looks back. There are also several short story collections that fill in gaps between novels.

The Dresden Files works because of Harry Dresden himself — a wisecracking, chivalrous, deeply flawed wizard who gets beaten to a pulp in nearly every book but refuses to stay down. Butcher is masterful at long-term plotting; seemingly minor details from early books become crucial plot points many volumes later, rewarding loyal readers with a sense that everything is connected. The series also features one of the best supporting casts in the genre, from Bob the talking skull to Michael Carpenter, a genuine paladin. With eighteen novels published and more planned, the Dresden Files is a long commitment — but one that keeps paying off.
