About This Series
Jim Butcher's Codex Alera famously originated from a bet — Butcher claimed he could write a good story from any premise, and was challenged to combine the lost Roman legion with Pokemon. The result is a six-book series set in Alera, a civilization descended from a lost Roman legion where every citizen can bond with elemental spirits called furies to gain supernatural abilities. Every citizen except Tavi, the protagonist, who is the only known person in Alera without any furycrafting ability at all.
Read the six books in order: Furies of Calderon, Academ's Fury, Cursor's Fury, Captain's Fury, Princeps' Fury, and First Lord's Fury. The series tells a complete story with a satisfying conclusion.
Codex Alera is a masterclass in escalation. Each book increases the stakes dramatically — from a frontier valley conflict to continent-wide warfare — while Tavi's cleverness compensates for his lack of powers in increasingly creative ways. Butcher's Roman-inspired world is richly detailed, with the fury system enabling everything from flying to city-wide infrastructure. The series also features some of the most creative and terrifying antagonist species in fantasy. It is a faster, more action-oriented read than many epic fantasies, making it an excellent choice for readers who want an engaging series that respects their time while still delivering epic scope.
