About This Series
Glen Cook's Black Company series is the grandfather of grimdark fantasy, predating the term by decades. First published in 1984, the series follows a mercenary company — the last of the Free Companies of Khatovar — through wars, betrayals, and supernatural horrors. The story is told through the company's Annalist (historian), giving it a ground-level perspective on epic events. The soldiers do not understand the grand political machinations they are part of; they just try to survive.
The Books of the North (The Black Company, Shadows Linger, The White Rose) should be read first. Then The Books of the South and Glittering Stone continue the saga through additional volumes. The main series spans ten books, counting the side novel The Silver Spike. Port of Shadows, a later-written interlude set between the first two books, is listed last because it was published decades after the rest.
Cook's influence on modern fantasy is enormous but often underrecognized. His decision to tell a fantasy epic from the perspective of common soldiers rather than kings and wizards was revolutionary, and his spare, unsentimental prose directly inspired Joe Abercrombie, Steven Erikson, and much of the grimdark movement. The Black Company treats war honestly — as confusing, morally compromising, and unglamorous. The characters are professional soldiers with dark humor and limited information, and the "evil" they fight for and against is always more complex than it appears. It is lean, atmospheric, and deeply influential fantasy that deserves its place among the genre's essential works.
