Completed Fantasy Series You Can Binge Without Waiting for the Next Book
Tired of waiting for The Winds of Winter? These fantasy series are finished, from short trilogies to fifteen-book epics.
By Nelera
Nothing hurts quite like falling in love with a series and then discovering the next book has no release date. If you'd rather read a story all the way to its ending, here are finished fantasy series from our catalog, sorted by commitment. Every one of them has a published final book.
Short and Complete (2 to 4 Books)
- The Broken Earth by N.K. Jemisin: three books, each of which won the Hugo Award. Ambitious, devastating and finished.
- Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo: a two-book heist story with one of fantasy's best ensembles.
- The Licanius Trilogy by James Islington: a time-twisting epic planned as a trilogy and delivered as one.
- The Burning Kingdoms by Tasha Suri: South Asian-inspired epic fantasy that wraps up with The Lotus Empire.
- The Scholomance by Naomi Novik: a deadly magic-school trilogy with a sharp, funny narrator.
- The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang: a brutal military fantasy trilogy inspired by 20th-century Chinese history.
Medium Commitment (5 to 7 Books)
- Lightbringer by Brent Weeks: five books built around a color-based magic system, with an ending that ties everything together.
- The Demon Cycle by Peter V. Brett: five books about humanity fighting back against demons that rise every night.
- Codex Alera by Jim Butcher: six books that began as a bet and became a fan favorite.
- The Belgariad by David Eddings: a classic five-book quest, with a sequel series if you want more.
- Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin: six short, beautiful books that changed the genre.
Big and Finished (8 or More Books)
- The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson: fourteen novels plus a prequel. After Jordan's death in 2007, Sanderson wrote the final three books from Jordan's notes.
- Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson: ten enormous books, complete since 2011.
- Cradle by Will Wight: twelve fast-moving progression fantasy books, finished in 2023.
- Temeraire by Naomi Novik: nine books of the Napoleonic Wars, fought with dragons.
- Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews: ten urban fantasy books, wrapped up with Magic Triumphs.
- The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne: nine books, ending with Scourged.
Finished, With a Catch
Some series reached the end of their main story while their worlds carry on. The original Mistborn trilogy is a complete story, though Sanderson continues the world in later eras. The First Law by Joe Abercrombie has a finished original trilogy and a finished follow-up trilogy, with standalones in between. And The Dark Tower is complete at eight books.
Series You Might Want to Wait On
For comparison, some hugely popular series are still unfinished. A Song of Ice and Fire is still waiting on The Winds of Winter, The Kingkiller Chronicle on The Doors of Stone, and The Stormlight Archive is planned to continue beyond its first five-book arc. If unfinished series make you nervous, our guide on whether to start an unfinished series can help you decide.
