About This Series
Brent Weeks' Lightbringer series is built on one of fantasy's most creative magic systems: chromaturgy, the ability to split light into its component colors and draft them into a physical substance called luxin. Each color has different properties and psychological effects, and drafters who use too much eventually "break the halo" and go mad. Set in a world of island nations called the Seven Satrapies, the series follows Kip, an overweight teenager who discovers he is the illegitimate son of the most powerful man alive.
The five books should be read in order: The Black Prism, The Blinding Knife, The Broken Eye, The Blood Mirror, and The Burning White. The series tells a complete story with a definitive ending.
Weeks builds layers of complexity throughout the series. What seems like a straightforward coming-of-age fantasy in the first book reveals itself to be a much more sophisticated exploration of religion, sacrifice, and the nature of power. The chromaturgy system is integral to the plot and fight scenes in ways that make the action feel fresh even in the fifth book. Kip's transformation from an insecure kid to a leader is earned through genuine struggle, and the supporting cast — particularly the morally ambiguous Gavin Guile — is excellent.
