The Poppy War — Reading Order

R.F. Kuang's Poppy War trilogy is one of the most brutal and ambitious fantasy debut series of the 21st century. Inspired by 20th-century Chinese history — particularly the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Nanjing Massacre — the series follows Rin, a war orphan from the south who tests into the most elite military academy in the Nikara Empire, discovers she has shamanic powers fueled by the gods, and is ultimately forced to make horrifying choices as her nation faces genocide.

Read the trilogy in order: The Poppy War, The Dragon Republic, and The Burning God. Each book corresponds roughly to a different period of Chinese history, with the first drawing on the Second Sino-Japanese War, the second on the Chinese Civil War, and the third on the Cultural Revolution and Mao's rise.

Kuang does not flinch. The Poppy War is fantasy that confronts the realities of war, colonialism, and radicalization head-on, using its fantastical elements to intensify rather than soften historical horrors.
