The Belgariad — Reading Order

David Eddings' Belgariad is one of the classic gateway fantasy series that introduced countless readers to the genre in the 1980s and 1990s. The five-book series follows Garion, a farm boy raised by his Aunt Pol, who discovers that he is the heir to a prophecy thousands of years in the making. With his aunt (who is actually a centuries-old sorceress) and his grandfather (the ancient sorcerer Belgarath), Garion sets out on a quest to recover a stolen orb and confront the god Torak.

Read the five books in order: Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit, Castle of Wizardry, and Enchanter's End Game. The sequel series, The Malloreon, continues the story with the same characters and can be read immediately after.

The Belgariad follows familiar fantasy archetypes — the farm boy hero, the wise mentor, the quest for a magical object — and executes them with warmth, humor, and genuine craft. Eddings openly acknowledged that he was writing within established tropes, and his skill lay in making those tropes feel fresh through character interaction. The banter between Belgarath, Polgara, Silk, and the rest of the cast is the series' greatest asset — these characters feel like a family you want to spend time with.
