Six of Crows (Grishaverse) — Reading Order

Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows duology is widely considered the crown jewel of the Grishaverse. Set in the merchant city of Ketterdam — a place inspired by Dutch Golden Age Amsterdam, run by gangs and commerce — the story follows Kaz Brekker, a teenage criminal prodigy, as he assembles a crew of six outcasts for an impossible heist: breaking into the most secure prison in the world.

Read Six of Crows first, then Crooked Kingdom. While these books are set in the same world as the Shadow and Bone trilogy, they can be read independently. However, reading Shadow and Bone first provides useful context about Grisha magic and Ravkan politics.

The Six of Crows duology succeeds because of its characters. Each member of Kaz's crew — the sharpshooter Jesper, the spy Inej, the Grisha Heartrender Nina, the demolitions expert Wylan, and the Fjerdan soldier Matthias — has a fully realized backstory and arc. Bardugo alternates perspectives masterfully, building tension through parallel narratives that converge in spectacular fashion. The heist structure keeps the pacing razor-sharp, and the themes of trauma, belonging, and defying the systems that exploit you give the story emotional resonance far beyond its genre. These are the books that elevated Bardugo from a popular YA author to a literary force.
