About This Series

N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy made history by winning the Hugo Award for Best Novel three years in a row — the only series ever to achieve this. Set on a supercontinent called the Stillness, where catastrophic seismic events periodically destroy civilization, the trilogy follows Essun, a woman with the power to control earthquakes (an orogene) searching for her daughter in the aftermath of a world-ending catastrophe called a Fifth Season.

The trilogy must be read in order: The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, and The Stone Sky. The story builds on itself with revelations that fundamentally change your understanding of earlier events. The Fifth Season notably employs second-person narration — an unusual choice that becomes thematically essential as the series unfolds.

Broken Earth is literary science fiction at its most ambitious. Jemisin uses the fantasy of orogeny (earth-manipulation) to explore real-world themes of systemic oppression, generational trauma, and environmental destruction with devastating precision. The Stillness is a world where prejudice is literally built into the geological record, and the orogenes — feared and enslaved for their power — serve as a potent metaphor without ever feeling like mere allegory. The prose is muscular and controlled, the emotional stakes are enormous, and the trilogy builds to a conclusion that is both cathartic and earned.
