About This Series

James S.A. Corey's The Expanse is the defining space opera of the 21st century. Set several hundred years in the future, humanity has colonized the solar system — Earth, Mars, and the asteroid Belt exist in uneasy political tension. When a crew of ice haulers aboard the Rocinante stumbles onto a conspiracy involving an alien protomolecule, they are drawn into an escalating conflict that will ultimately determine humanity's place in the galaxy.

Read the nine main novels in order: Leviathan Wakes through Leviathan Falls. There are also several novellas and short stories set between the novels that add depth but are not required. The series was written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under their shared pen name, and they completed the entire series as planned — a rarity in long-running science fiction.

The Expanse succeeds because it treats space realistically. The physics of space travel, the biology of living in low gravity, and the politics of resource scarcity all feel grounded and well-thought-out. The crew of the Rocinante — Holden, Naomi, Amos, and Alex — have the kind of found-family dynamic that makes you genuinely invested in their survival across nine books. The series also scales beautifully, starting as a noir-flavored mystery in the Belt and ending with questions about the nature of consciousness and humanity's cosmic significance. The television adaptation was excellent, but the books go significantly further and deeper.
