About This Series
Isaac Asimov's Foundation series is one of the pillars of science fiction literature. Originally published as a series of short stories in the 1940s, the saga envisions a galaxy-spanning civilization facing inevitable collapse. The mathematician Hari Seldon develops psychohistory — a science that can predict the behavior of large populations — and establishes the Foundation, a colony designed to shorten the coming dark ages from thirty thousand years to a single millennium.
The original Foundation trilogy (Foundation, Foundation and Empire, Second Foundation) should be read first. Asimov later wrote prequels (Prelude to Foundation, Forward the Foundation) and sequels (Foundation's Edge, Foundation and Earth) that connect the series to his Robot and Empire novels. Start with the original trilogy, and if you want more, continue in publication order.
Foundation's genius lies in its scale and its central idea. Rather than following individual heroes, the original stories span centuries, showing how Seldon's plan plays out through crises that test the Foundation's survival. Asimov was fascinated by the fall of the Roman Empire and used it as his model, asking whether civilizational collapse could be predicted and mitigated. The prose is spare and idea-driven — this is science fiction of concepts rather than character — but the concepts are so compelling that the series has influenced everything from Paul Krugman's career choice to Elon Musk's stated mission.
