About This Series
John Scalzi's Old Man's War series begins with one of the most inventive premises in military science fiction: on your 75th birthday, you can join the Colonial Defense Forces, receive a new, enhanced body, and fight to protect humanity's interstellar colonies. The catch is that you can never return to Earth. John Perry, the protagonist, enlists after his wife's death and discovers that the universe is far more dangerous — and more morally complex — than anyone on Earth realizes.
Read Old Man's War first, then The Ghost Brigades, The Last Colony, Zoe's Tale, The Human Division, and The End of All Things. Zoe's Tale retells The Last Colony from another character's perspective and can be read in either order with it.
Scalzi writes with a conversational clarity that makes even complex ideas accessible and entertaining. The series echoes Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers in its basic premise but subverts the militaristic philosophy, ultimately questioning whether humanity's colonial approach to space is justified. The dialogue is sharp, the pacing is excellent, and the series grows more politically nuanced as it progresses.
