About This Series

Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan Saga is a space opera masterwork spanning over fifteen novels and novellas. The primary protagonist is Miles Vorkosigan — born with brittle bones on a militaristic planet that despises physical weakness — who compensates with manic energy, brilliant improvisation, and a talent for talking his way into and out of impossible situations. The series blends military science fiction, political intrigue, mystery, and romance with extraordinary dexterity.

The reading order is debated, but starting with The Warrior's Apprentice (Miles's first adventure) or Shards of Honor (his parents' story) both work well. The internal chronological order is the most popular approach for first-time readers, and it is the one our list follows. It opens with Falling Free, set two centuries before Miles is born and entirely optional, and it includes Borders of Infinity, which collects three novellas (The Mountains of Mourning, Labyrinth, and The Borders of Infinity).

Bujold won four Hugo Awards for Best Novel with books in this series — more than any other author for a single series. Her writing is characterized by sharp wit, deep empathy, and an understanding that the most interesting conflicts are character-driven. Miles is one of science fiction's most unforgettable protagonists — his physical limitations force him to be creative, and his greatest victories come from understanding people rather than outgunning them. The series also features one of the genre's best romances in A Civil Campaign.
