About This Series
Martha Wells' Murderbot Diaries follows a self-aware security android (a SecUnit) that has hacked its own governance module — freeing itself from human control — and would really rather just watch its favorite soap operas than deal with messy human problems. Unfortunately, humans keep getting into dangerous situations, and Murderbot keeps reluctantly saving them. The series combines science fiction action with a deeply relatable protagonist navigating anxiety, autonomy, and the awkwardness of social interaction.
Start with All Systems Red (a novella), then continue with Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, Exit Strategy, Network Effect (the first full-length novel), Fugitive Telemetry (a mystery set just before Network Effect), System Collapse, and Platform Decay. The novellas are short and addictive; most readers tear through the first four in a weekend.
Murderbot has become one of the most beloved characters in modern science fiction because Wells captures something universal through an inhuman lens. Murderbot's social anxiety, its preference for fiction over reality, and its struggle to define itself outside of its designed purpose resonate deeply with readers. The series is also surprisingly thoughtful about corporate power, autonomy, and what it means to be a person. Wells writes action crisply and efficiently, and the mysteries Murderbot investigates are genuinely compelling. These are comfort reads in the best sense — engaging, funny, emotionally satisfying, and always leave you wanting more.
