About This Series

Naomi Novik's Temeraire series reimagines the Napoleonic Wars in a world where dragons exist and serve as an aerial corps for the world's military powers. Captain Will Laurence of the British Navy captures a French ship carrying a dragon egg, and when the dragon hatches and bonds with him, Laurence must leave his naval career to join the Aerial Corps. The dragon, whom Laurence names Temeraire, is intelligent, curious, and increasingly interested in dragon rights.

The nine books should be read in order, starting with His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire in the UK) and ending with League of Dragons. The series takes Laurence and Temeraire around the world — from Britain to China, Africa, Australia, and South America.

Novik is a meticulous worldbuilder who thought carefully about how the existence of dragons would change history, warfare, and culture across different civilizations. Each country's dragons reflect its culture: British dragons are treated as military assets, Chinese dragons are citizens with rights, and Tswana dragons form partnerships with humans. The relationship between Laurence (a proper British officer) and Temeraire (an increasingly radical dragon with Enlightenment ideals) provides both warmth and philosophical tension. The series is a wonderful blend of historical fiction, military adventure, and fantasy that rewards history buffs and dragon lovers alike.
