About This Series
Diana Gabaldon's companion Lord John Grey series expands the Outlander universe through the eyes of Lord John Grey, a British army officer and friend to Jamie Fraser who also happens to be gay in 18th-century England — a time when homosexuality was punishable by death. The series follows John through his military career and personal life, with each book functioning as a historical mystery set against real events.
The Lord John books can be read alongside the main Outlander series or on their own. Read them in publication order: Lord John and the Private Matter, Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade, Lord John and the Hand of Devils (three novellas), and The Scottish Prisoner, which reunites Lord John with Jamie Fraser.
Gabaldon brings the same meticulous historical research to the Lord John books as to the main Outlander series. Lord John is a compelling protagonist — intelligent, principled, and navigating the constant tension between his public duty and his private identity. The mystery plots are well-constructed, the 18th-century settings are vividly rendered, and John's perspective provides a fascinating counterpoint to the main Outlander narrative. These books reward Outlander fans with deeper understanding of a beloved secondary character while standing alone as excellent historical mysteries.
