About This Series
Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series is a genre-defying epic that blends historical fiction, romance, adventure, and a touch of science fiction through its time-travel premise. The story begins when Claire Randall, a World War II combat nurse, touches an ancient standing stone in Scotland and is transported back to 1743, where she meets and falls in love with Jamie Fraser, a young Highland warrior. What follows is a sweeping saga that spans continents and centuries.
The main series should be read in order: Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, Drums of Autumn, The Fiery Cross, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, An Echo in the Bone, Written in My Own Heart's Blood, and Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. Gabaldon has also written the Lord John Grey series, a companion set of novels following a secondary character, which can be read alongside or after the main books.
Gabaldon's background as a scientist gives her historical fiction an unusual rigor — the 18th-century settings are meticulously researched, from Jacobite Scotland to colonial America to the American Revolution. The series excels at showing how daily life, medicine, politics, and culture actually functioned in these periods. At its heart, though, Outlander is a love story — the relationship between Claire and Jamie is one of the most fully realized in popular fiction, grounded in mutual respect, humor, and a partnership that deepens over decades. The books are long and richly detailed, rewarding readers who want to truly inhabit another time.
