The Scholomance — Reading Order

Naomi Novik's Scholomance trilogy imagines the worst magical school in fiction — a school with no teachers, no breaks, and hallways filled with maleficaria (monsters) that devour students on a daily basis. The Scholomance was built to protect young wizards during their most vulnerable years, but it has gone catastrophically wrong. The protagonist, El Higgins, has an affinity for mass destruction spells and must survive three years while resisting both the monsters and her own terrifying power.

Novik takes the magical school trope and inverts every comfortable assumption. There is no Dumbledore figure, no safe common room, no guarantee of survival. The school itself is a character — a malevolent, decaying structure that seems designed to kill its students. El is a brilliant protagonist: sharp-tongued, socially isolated, and terrified of becoming the destroyer her power wants her to be. Novik uses the school setting to explore class privilege (wealthy enclaves get better supplies and survival rates), colonialism (the school's resources were built on exploitation), and the impossible choice between personal survival and collective good. It is Harry Potter for people who always suspected Hogwarts was hiding something much darker behind those moving staircases.
