About This Series
Peter V. Brett's Demon Cycle series (beginning with The Warded Man, titled The Painted Man in the UK) imagines a world where demons rise from the earth's core every night, and humanity survives only by hiding behind magical wards. Civilization has regressed to a medieval level, and fear rules every aspect of life. The series follows three protagonists from different cultures who each discover a way to fight back against the demon threat.
Read the five books in order: The Warded Man, The Desert Spear, The Daylight War, The Skull Throne, and The Core. The series is complete.
Brett's world-building is the series' standout quality. The ward magic system — where geometric symbols drawn or tattooed on surfaces create barriers and weapons against demons — is tactile and visually compelling. The three-culture structure (a Western analog, an Arabian-inspired desert society, and a matriarchal swamp culture) provides multiple perspectives on the same existential threat. The series also features some of the most visceral and creative action sequences in fantasy, particularly as the protagonists learn to combine wards with combat.
