The Dark Tower — Reading Order

Stephen King's The Dark Tower is the connective tissue of his entire literary universe — an eight-book epic that blends western, fantasy, horror, and science fiction into something entirely its own. The series follows Roland Deschain, the last gunslinger in a world that has "moved on," as he pursues the Man in Black across a vast, decaying landscape toward the Dark Tower, a nexus point that holds all of reality together.

The reading order is the publication order: The Gunslinger, The Drawing of the Three, The Waste Lands, Wizard and Glass, Wolves of the Calla, Song of Susannah, The Dark Tower, and The Wind Through the Keyhole (which fits chronologically between books four and five but was published last). Be aware that The Gunslinger has a notably different tone from the rest of the series — if it feels too sparse, The Drawing of the Three is where the series finds its voice.

The Dark Tower is King at his most ambitious and personal. The series references and connects to dozens of his other novels — characters from It, The Stand, Salem's Lot, and others appear or are mentioned — making the entire King bibliography feel like one interconnected story. The series wrestles with addiction, guilt, obsession, and the nature of storytelling itself. King even writes himself into the narrative in a bold metafictional move that divides readers but is undeniably daring. It is sprawling, occasionally messy, and unlike anything else in fantasy or horror.
