About This Series

Joe Abercrombie's First Law series is the gold standard of grimdark fantasy — a subgenre that strips away the romanticism of traditional fantasy to reveal the ugly, messy, often darkly funny reality underneath. The original trilogy follows three main characters: Logen Ninefingers, a barbarian trying to leave his violent past behind; Captain Jezal dan Luthar, a vain nobleman; and Inquisitor Glokta, a crippled torturer. Their stories converge as war threatens the Union, the series' central nation.

Start with the original trilogy: The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, Last Argument of Kings. Then read the three standalones — Best Served Cold, The Heroes, and Red Country — which are set in the same world with recurring characters but tell independent stories. Finally, The Age of Madness trilogy (A Little Hatred, The Trouble With Peace, The Wisdom of Crowds) jumps forward a generation and brings the saga full circle.

Abercrombie's greatest strength is his characters. They are deeply flawed, often unlikable, and utterly compelling. Glokta in particular — a man who tortures people for a living — is somehow one of the most sympathetic and darkly hilarious characters in fantasy. The series deconstructs fantasy tropes ruthlessly: quests do not go as planned, heroes are not rewarded, and power corrupts absolutely. Yet despite its cynicism, The First Law has genuine emotional depth and a wicked sense of humor. It is not for readers who want comfort — it is for readers who want honesty.
