About This Series
Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea is one of the great literary achievements in fantasy. Beginning with A Wizard of Earthsea in 1968, the series is set in an archipelago world where magic is rooted in knowing the true names of things. The first book follows Ged, a gifted young wizard whose arrogance unleashes a shadow upon the world that he must confront. It is a coming-of-age story told with the economy and power of myth.
Read A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, then Tehanu, Tales from Earthsea, and The Other Wind. The first three books were written in the late 1960s and early 1970s; Tehanu arrived in 1990 and deliberately reexamines the earlier books through a feminist lens. This evolution is one of the series' great strengths — Le Guin grew as a thinker and revisited her own creation with sharper eyes.
Le Guin's prose is among the finest in any genre. She writes with the clarity and resonance of a fable, using simple language to convey profound ideas about balance, power, mortality, and identity. Earthsea does not have the length or complexity of modern epic fantasy — each book is compact and purposeful — but it has a depth of meaning that reveals new layers with each rereading. The series was groundbreaking in featuring a protagonist of color in an era when fantasy was overwhelmingly white, and Le Guin's ecological and anti-imperialist themes feel more relevant today than ever.
