About This Series
Susan Cooper's The Dark Is Rising sequence is a classic of British children's fantasy that weaves Arthurian legend, Celtic mythology, and the struggle between Light and Dark into a story set in modern (1960s-70s) England and Wales. The five books follow two groups of young protagonists — the Drew children and Will Stanton — as they become embroiled in an ancient cosmic conflict. Will discovers on his eleventh birthday that he is the last of the Old Ones, immortal beings who serve the Light.
Read the five books in order: Over Sea, Under Stone; The Dark Is Rising; Greenwitch; The Grey King; and Silver on the Tree. The Dark Is Rising (book two) is the most acclaimed and can serve as an entry point, though the full sequence is more rewarding.
Cooper writes with a poet's sensitivity to landscape, season, and atmosphere. The English and Welsh settings are as much characters as the people, and the way ancient myth erupts into the everyday world creates a sense of wonder that is distinctly British. The series was published alongside the Narnia books and The Lord of the Rings, and it shares their seriousness of purpose — the stakes are genuinely cosmic, and the losses are real. The Grey King, set in Wales, won the Newbery Medal and contains some of the most haunting imagery in children's literature.
