About This Series

Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy imagines a future Chicago divided into five factions, each dedicated to a particular virtue: Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peace), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery), and Erudite (intelligence). At sixteen, every citizen must choose which faction to join for life. Beatrice Prior, who renames herself Tris, discovers she is Divergent — fitting into no single faction — which makes her a threat to those in power.

The reading order is Divergent, Insurgent, then Allegiant. Roth also published Four: A Divergent Collection, a set of short stories told from Tobias's perspective that fills in backstory and can be read after the main trilogy. The series is best experienced in publication order, as each book builds directly on the last with escalating reveals about the nature of the faction system and the world beyond the city walls.

Divergent captured the imagination of readers during the peak of the YA dystopian wave for good reason — its faction system is an immediately engaging premise that doubles as a commentary on the human tendency to oversimplify identity. Tris is a protagonist who grows tougher and more morally complex with each book, and the series is unafraid to take its characters to dark places. Roth's bold narrative choices in Allegiant divided readers, but the trilogy as a whole remains a thought-provoking exploration of identity, free will, and what it means to be brave.
