Legend — Reading Order

Marie Lu's Legend trilogy is a tightly plotted dystopian series set in a future Los Angeles that has been split between the wealthy Republic and the impoverished Colonies. Day is the Republic's most wanted criminal — a fifteen-year-old from the slums who fights against the system. June is the Republic's most brilliant prodigy — a fifteen-year-old military officer groomed for greatness. When their paths cross under tragic circumstances, both discover that the Republic they thought they knew is built on terrible secrets.

Read the three books in order: Legend, Prodigy, and Champion. Lu also wrote Rebel, a standalone sequel set a decade later. The original trilogy is complete and satisfying on its own.

Legend succeeds through its dual perspective structure — alternating between Day and June gives readers a complete view of a society that looks very different depending on which side of the wealth divide you stand on. Lu's pacing is exceptional; the books are lean, propulsive, and never waste a page. The romance develops naturally from the characters' opposing perspectives, and the political thriller elements keep the tension high. Champion in particular features one of the most emotionally affecting endings in YA dystopian fiction.
