About This Series

James Dashner's The Maze Runner series drops readers directly into one of the most compelling mysteries in YA fiction. Thomas wakes up in a metal elevator with no memory, surrounded by a group of boys trapped in a place called the Glade — an open space enclosed by an enormous, ever-changing maze populated by deadly creatures called Grievers. The only way out is through the maze, and nobody has ever survived a night inside it.

The main trilogy should be read in order: The Maze Runner, The Scorch Trials, and The Death Cure. Dashner later wrote two prequel novels — The Kill Order and The Fever Code — that explain the catastrophic events that led to the maze's creation. These prequels are best saved for after completing the original trilogy, as they spoil major revelations from the main books.

What makes The Maze Runner stand out among dystopian YA is its relentless pacing. Dashner trusts readers with ambiguity and doles out answers sparingly, which keeps the page-turning tension high throughout the series. Each book escalates the stakes and expands the world beyond the maze into a post-apocalyptic landscape ravaged by solar flares and a deadly virus. The series raises questions about sacrifice, consent, and whether terrible means can ever justify supposedly noble ends — questions it refreshingly refuses to answer simply.
