Fitz and the Fool Trilogy — Reading Order

Robin Hobb's Fitz and the Fool trilogy is the emotional culmination of the sixteen-book Realm of the Elderlings saga. Returning to FitzChivalry Farseer decades after the events of the Tawny Man trilogy, the series finds Fitz living quietly with his family when the Fool — his oldest and most complex friend — arrives at his door, broken and desperate. A daughter Fitz never knew he had has been kidnapped by the Servants, a cult that manipulates prophecy, and the quest to rescue her will demand everything from both Fitz and the Fool.

The trilogy consists of Fool's Assassin, Fool's Quest, and Assassin's Fate. This series should absolutely not be read without first reading the Farseer trilogy and the Tawny Man trilogy at minimum. Ideally, read all previous Realm of the Elderlings books — the Liveship Traders and Rain Wild Chronicles provide important context.

Assassin's Fate in particular delivers a conclusion that honors everything that came before while breaking your heart in ways you did not expect. This is not a starting point; it is a destination, and arriving there is one of fantasy's most rewarding journeys.
