About This Series
Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard series is fantasy's answer to Ocean's Eleven — a swashbuckling saga about a crew of elite con artists operating in a world of Renaissance-inspired city-states, magic, and organized crime. The protagonist, Locke Lamora, was raised from childhood to be a thief and confidence man, and his elaborate schemes against the nobility of the city of Camorr drive plots full of twists, humor, and genuine danger.
Read The Lies of Locke Lamora first, then Red Seas Under Red Skies, and The Republic of Thieves. The series is still ongoing, with additional books planned. Each book stands fairly well on its own while advancing the overarching narrative of Locke's mysterious past and his complex relationship with his nemesis-turned-complicated-something, Sabetha.
Lynch writes action sequences and dialogue with cinematic flair. The banter between Locke and his best friend Jean Tannen is some of the best in the genre — funny, vulgar, and deeply affectionate. But what elevates the series beyond heist-fantasy is its emotional depth. Locke's grief, his self-destructive tendencies, and the theme of found family give the books genuine weight beneath the spectacular cons. The world-building is also superb, drawing on real history (Venice, the Spanish Main) while adding alchemical wonders and a mysterious elder civilization whose ruins loom over the present.
