Graceling Realm — Reading Order

Kristin Cashore's Graceling Realm series is a character-driven fantasy built around the concept of Graces — extraordinary abilities that manifest in certain individuals, marking them with mismatched eyes. Katsa, the protagonist of the first book, was Graced with killing — an ability that has made her a weapon for her uncle the king. The series follows Katsa and other Graced characters as they navigate a world where their gifts are both empowering and constraining.

The first three books — Graceling, Fire, and Bitterblue — are set in the same world but feature different protagonists. Fire is a prequel/companion set in a neighboring kingdom. Cashore later returned to the realm with Winterkeep and Seasparrow, both set after Bitterblue. Reading in publication order is recommended, though each book stands reasonably well alone.

Cashore writes feminist fantasy with teeth. Her protagonists refuse the roles society has assigned them, and the series is unapologetic about centering women's autonomy, including the right to choose not to marry or have children — a stance that was unusually explicit in YA when Graceling was published in 2008. The world-building is restrained but effective, the romance in Graceling is refreshingly egalitarian, and Fire offers one of the most nuanced explorations of beauty as both gift and curse in fantasy.
