About This Series
Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle is remarkable not just for its story but for its origin — Paolini began writing Eragon at age fifteen, and the book was published when he was nineteen. The series follows Eragon, a farm boy who discovers a mysterious stone that turns out to be a dragon egg. When the dragon Saphira hatches, Eragon becomes the first new Dragon Rider in over a century and is thrust into a war against the tyrant king Galbatorix.
Read the four books in order: Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance. Paolini later published The Fork the Witch and the Worm, a collection of short stories set after the main series, and Murtagh, a standalone novel following a key character from the original series.
The Inheritance Cycle wears its influences openly — Tolkien, Star Wars, and Anne McCaffrey are all evident — but Paolini builds a genuinely engaging world with its own distinct identity. The Ancient Language magic system, where knowing the true name of something grants power over it, creates interesting strategic constraints. The series matures significantly from the first book to the last, reflecting Paolini's own growth as a writer. While Eragon is a straightforward hero's journey, the later books grapple with more complex moral questions and feature increasingly sophisticated prose.
