Powder Mage — Reading Order

Brian McClellan's Powder Mage series reinvents epic fantasy by setting it during a period analogous to the French Revolution — complete with gunpowder technology that has become a source of magic. In this world, powder mages can ingest gunpowder to gain enhanced senses, telekinetically control bullets, and perform other abilities that make them the most dangerous soldiers alive. The series begins with Field Marshal Tamas launching a coup against the corrupt king of Adro.

The original Powder Mage trilogy (Promise of Blood, The Crimson Campaign, The Autumn Republic) should be read first. McClellan then wrote Gods of Blood and Powder, a sequel trilogy set in the same world. Both trilogies are complete.

McClellan, a student of Brandon Sanderson, shares his mentor's gift for hard magic systems but applies it to a very different setting. The flintlock fantasy subgenre was relatively unexplored before Powder Mage, and McClellan's combination of Napoleonic warfare, magic, and political revolution feels genuinely fresh. The multiple viewpoint structure balances military strategy, detective work, and personal drama effectively.
