About This Series
Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments series created the Shadowhunter Chronicles, one of the most expansive urban fantasy universes in YA literature. Set in a version of New York City where demons, vampires, werewolves, and faeries exist alongside unsuspecting humans, the series follows Clary Fray, who discovers she is a Shadowhunter — a half-angel warrior dedicated to protecting humanity from demonic threats.
The six books should be read in order: City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire. Clare has written multiple companion series set in the same universe — The Infernal Devices (Victorian London), The Dark Artifices (Los Angeles), and The Last Hours (Edwardian London). The Infernal Devices is particularly beloved and can be read after the first three Mortal Instruments books.
Clare excels at building a universe that feels both vast and interconnected. The Shadowhunter world has its own history, politics, laws, and culture, drawn from a mix of angelic mythology and real-world folklore. The series also features one of YA's most iconic characters in Magnus Bane, the centuries-old High Warlock of Brooklyn, whose presence elevates every scene he appears in. The Mortal Instruments rewards dedicated readers with callbacks, connections, and character appearances across its many companion series, creating a reading experience that only deepens over time.
