About This Series
Philip Pullman's The Book of Dust trilogy serves as both prequel and sequel to His Dark Materials, expanding the universe of daemons, Dust, and parallel worlds. La Belle Sauvage follows the infant Lyra being rescued during a catastrophic flood, while The Secret Commonwealth picks up with a twenty-year-old Lyra at Oxford, estranged from her daemon Pantalaimon and searching for meaning in a world where the Magisterium's power is growing.
La Belle Sauvage comes first chronologically, but reading His Dark Materials (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass) first is recommended for emotional context. Our list follows that order, then continues with La Belle Sauvage, The Secret Commonwealth, and The Rose Field.
Pullman is one of the finest prose stylists writing in any genre, and The Book of Dust showcases his gifts while tackling more adult themes than His Dark Materials. The Secret Commonwealth in particular deals with the crisis of faith — not religious faith, but faith in imagination, in the bond between self and soul. Lyra's estrangement from Pan is a devastating metaphor for the disconnection many young adults feel from the wonder they experienced as children. The trilogy concluded in 2025 with The Rose Field, and the three books are rich, provocative, and essential for anyone who was moved by His Dark Materials.
