About This Series

Andrzej Sapkowski's The Witcher series originated in Polish short fiction in the 1980s before expanding into a multi-novel saga. It follows Geralt of Rivia, a professional monster hunter in a morally ambiguous world that draws heavily on Slavic mythology and European fairy tales. Geralt is stoic, sarcastic, and bound by a complex personal code, and his story intertwines with the powerful sorceress Yennefer and his adopted daughter Ciri, who may hold the key to the world's future.

The recommended reading order begins with the two short story collections — The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny — which introduce the characters and world before the main saga. Then proceed through the five novels: Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and The Lady of the Lake. Season of Storms is a standalone novel that takes place within the timeline of The Last Wish and can be read last, followed by Crossroads of Ravens, a later prequel about Geralt's first steps as a witcher.

The Witcher's world is intentionally unglamorous. Sapkowski subverts fairy tale tropes with dark humor, showing that the real monsters are often human. The series gained massive international recognition through the video game adaptations and the Netflix show, but the books offer a far more nuanced and literary experience. Sapkowski's prose (particularly in David French's English translations) is witty, philosophical, and surprisingly tender. The relationship between Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri forms the emotional core of the series, and their family dynamic is one of the most compelling in fantasy literature.
