About This Series
Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch trilogy opens with one of the most audacious premises in modern science fiction. Breq was once Justice of Toren — a massive starship housing thousands of linked human bodies (ancillaries) sharing a single artificial intelligence. Now reduced to a single body after a betrayal by the Lord of the Radch, Breq embarks on a quest for vengeance that will challenge the foundations of a galaxy-spanning empire.
Read the trilogy in order: Ancillary Justice, Ancillary Sword, and Ancillary Mercy. Leckie also wrote Provenance, a standalone novel set in the same universe that can be read after the trilogy.
Ancillary Justice won the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke Awards simultaneously — a feat never accomplished before. Leckie's most discussed innovation is the Radchaai language, which does not distinguish gender, resulting in the universal use of she/her pronouns throughout the narrative. This is more than a gimmick — it forces readers to confront their own assumptions and mirrors the alienness of the Radch culture. Beyond the pronoun experiment, the series is a thoughtful exploration of identity (what happens when a collective consciousness is reduced to one?), colonialism, and justice. Leckie writes with precision and emotional intelligence, creating a universe that feels both vast and intimate.
