About This Series
Dennis E. Taylor's Bobiverse series asks: what would happen if a software engineer's consciousness were uploaded into a self-replicating Von Neumann probe and sent to explore the galaxy? The answer is one of the most entertaining and surprisingly thoughtful science fiction series of the past decade. Bob Johansson is killed in a traffic accident and wakes up a century later as an artificial intelligence tasked with finding habitable planets for a humanity that has nearly destroyed Earth.
Read the five books in order: We Are Legion (We Are Bob), For We Are Many, All These Worlds, Heaven's River, and Not Till We Are Lost. Each book expands the scope as Bob replicates himself and his copies develop distinct personalities while exploring different star systems simultaneously.
The Bobiverse works because Taylor grounds big science fiction concepts in an approachable, geeky voice. Bob's copies reference Star Trek, argue about beer, and approach galaxy-spanning problems with an engineer's pragmatism. But beneath the humor, the series engages seriously with questions about identity (when your copies diverge, which one is the real you?), first contact, and humanity's long-term survival. Taylor clearly did his homework — the orbital mechanics, relativistic time dilation, and engineering solutions feel plausible.
