About This Series
Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time is one of the most inventive and acclaimed science fiction novels of the past decade. The story alternates between two narratives: the last remnants of humanity aboard a failing generation ship searching for a new home, and the evolution of a spider civilization on a terraformed planet that was meant for humanity. A nanovirus designed to accelerate evolution was accidentally deployed on the wrong species, and over thousands of years, the spiders develop intelligence, culture, and technology.
Read Children of Time first, then Children of Ruin, Children of Memory, and Children of Strife. Each book introduces a new alien species while continuing the themes of the first. The spider civilization in the first book is the standout — Tchaikovsky makes arachnids not just sympathetic but genuinely compelling protagonists.
Tchaikovsky accomplishes something extraordinary in this series: he makes readers care about spiders. The chapters on the spider world track named individuals across generations, showing how their society evolves from simple predators to a complex civilization with its own religion, science, and internal conflicts. It is a dazzling feat of imagination that also serves as a mirror for human civilization. The series asks what intelligence really means, whether communication across truly alien minds is possible, and what humanity is willing to sacrifice to survive. The prose is engaging and the pacing excellent — this is hard science fiction that is genuinely difficult to put down.
