About This Series
Dan Simmons' Hyperion Cantos is one of the most literarily ambitious science fiction series ever written. Structured after Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, the first novel follows seven pilgrims traveling to the Time Tombs on the planet Hyperion, each sharing the story of how they came to make this dangerous journey. The Shrike — a terrifying, time-manipulating creature covered in blades — awaits them, and each pilgrim has a different relationship to this enigmatic being.
Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion form a complete duology and should be read together. Endymion and The Rise of Endymion continue the story centuries later with new characters and a very different tone. The first duology is the essential read; the second is worthwhile but not universally beloved.
Hyperion is a book that contains multitudes. Each pilgrim's tale is told in a different literary style — one is military science fiction, another is noir detective, another is literary romance — and they all work. Simmons weaves in references to John Keats, whose poetry becomes integral to the plot, alongside far-future technology, artificial intelligence, and time travel. The world-building spans an entire galaxy, but the emotional core is deeply personal: parents and children, faith and doubt, love and sacrifice. The Shrike itself has become one of science fiction's most iconic and terrifying creations.
