About This Series
Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy is the most detailed and scientifically rigorous vision of planetary colonization ever written. Following the First Hundred — a group of scientists and engineers sent to colonize Mars — the trilogy spans over two centuries as Mars is slowly terraformed from a barren red desert into a habitable world. Along the way, the colonists grapple with the science of terraforming, revolutionary politics, and the question of whether humanity has the right to transform another world.
Read the trilogy in order: Red Mars, Green Mars, and Blue Mars. The color in each title reflects the stage of terraforming: the original red planet, the emergence of plant life, and finally the creation of oceans.
Robinson is unique among science fiction authors for the depth of his scientific and political imagination. The terraforming process is described in extraordinary detail — atmospheric chemistry, areology (Martian geology), genetic engineering of organisms — and it all feels plausible. But the human drama is equally rich: the ideological conflicts between those who want to preserve Mars as it is (the Reds) and those who want to make it Earth-like (the Greens) mirror real environmental debates. The Mars trilogy is demanding — Robinson's prose is dense and his pacing deliberate — but for readers who want science fiction that takes both the science and the fiction seriously, there is nothing else like it.
