About This Series
Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is the funniest science fiction series ever written, and it is not particularly close. When Arthur Dent's house is demolished to make way for a bypass — and then, minutes later, the Earth itself is demolished to make way for a hyperspace bypass — he finds himself hitchhiking through the galaxy with his alien friend Ford Prefect, armed only with a towel and a deeply impractical electronic guidebook.
The five books (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life the Universe and Everything, So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, Mostly Harmless) form what Adams famously called "a trilogy in five parts." Eoin Colfer later wrote a sixth book, And Another Thing, which is authorized but optional. The first two books are the strongest; the series becomes increasingly melancholic as it progresses, reflecting Adams' own philosophical evolution.
Adams was a singular comedic voice — his humor combines absurdist wordplay, philosophical insight, and a gentle sadness about the human condition. The Answer to Life, the Universe and Everything being 42 has become one of the most recognized jokes in geek culture, but the deeper joke — that the question was never properly understood — is pure Adams. Beneath the comedy, the series asks real questions about meaning, purpose, and humanity's place in an indifferent universe. It just happens to ask them while describing a whale materializing above a planet and trying to make friends with the ground.
