About This Series
Liu Cixin's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy (commonly known by its first book, The Three-Body Problem) is the most significant Chinese science fiction work to reach a global audience and one of the most mind-expanding series in modern science fiction. Beginning during China's Cultural Revolution, the story spirals outward to encompass first contact, interstellar war, and the ultimate fate of the universe across billions of years.
Read the three books in order: The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death's End. Ken Liu translated the first and third books into English, while Joel Martinsen translated the second. The translations are excellent, though readers should be aware that the prose style differs from typical Western science fiction — it is more focused on ideas and scale than character interiority.
The trilogy's central concept — the Dark Forest theory of cosmic sociology — is one of the most chilling and logically compelling ideas in science fiction. It proposes a terrifying answer to the Fermi Paradox that has become widely discussed even outside of science fiction circles. Liu Cixin thinks at a scale that is genuinely staggering, describing technological and temporal spans that dwarf nearly everything else in the genre. The series demands patience and rewards it with some of the most awe-inspiring set pieces in science fiction — from a virtual reality recreation of three-body orbital mechanics to a two-dimensional weapon that flattens solar systems. It is challenging, occasionally dense, and absolutely unforgettable.
